Reaching your ideal weight or building muscle isn’t just about eating “healthy”. It’s about eating the right amounts for your body and your goal. Yet tracking macros, weighing ingredients and calculating calories can quickly turn into a frustrating full-time job.
This guide explains what macros are, how to choose the right split for losing fat, building muscle or maintaining your weight, and how a personalized meal plan can do the math for you.
What are macros?
Macros, short for macronutrients, are the three nutrients that give your body energy:
- Protein (4 calories per gram) builds and repairs muscle and keeps you full.
- Carbohydrates (4 calories per gram) are your body’s main fuel, especially for training.
- Fat (9 calories per gram) supports hormones, brain health and the absorption of vitamins.
Your total calories decide whether you lose, gain or maintain weight. Your macro split decides what that weight is made of, and how you feel while you get there.
Step 1: Start with your goal
Losing fat
To lose fat you need to eat a little less energy than you burn. The key is to keep protein high so the weight you lose comes from fat and not from muscle. A common starting point is a moderate protein-forward split, with carbs placed around your workouts and fats kept moderate. Aggressive cuts are hard to sustain, so a small, steady deficit usually works better than a drastic one.
Building muscle
To build muscle you need enough protein, a small calorie surplus and enough carbohydrates to fuel your training. Many active people do well with a higher share of carbs and solid protein at every meal. Building muscle is slow, so consistency week after week matters more than any single day.
Maintaining your weight
If you are happy with your weight and want more energy, better digestion or simply less time thinking about food, a balanced split is a good place to start: protein at every meal, plenty of vegetables, quality carbs and healthy fats.
Step 2: Choose a style you can actually follow
The best macro plan is the one you can stick to. Some people feel great on lower-carb or keto eating, others perform better with more carbs. Some prefer plant-based, vegetarian or pescatarian meals. All of these can reach the same goal if the totals are right.
When you build your MB Smart Meals profile, you choose your goal and your dietary style (balanced, high protein, low carb, keto, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian or kosher style) or you can ask us to recommend the best option for you.
Step 3: Get protein right first
If you only track one number, make it protein. Spreading it across your meals helps you stay full, protects muscle and makes it easier to control your appetite. A practical habit is to include a full portion of protein in every lunch and dinner, which is exactly how our meals are built.
Step 4: Adjust based on results, not on one day
Your first macro split is a starting point, not a final answer. Watch your progress for two or three weeks: how your weight, energy, sleep and training are trending. If nothing is moving, adjust the totals slightly. One heavy day or one light day on the scale doesn’t mean the plan isn’t working.
Note: if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or take medication that affects your diet, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before changing your nutrition.
Common macro mistakes
- Eating too little protein, especially at breakfast and lunch.
- Cutting calories too aggressively, which makes the plan impossible to sustain.
- Ignoring portions of “healthy” foods like nuts, oils and dressings, which add up quickly.
- Changing the plan every few days instead of giving it time to work.
- Weighing every gram forever. It’s useful to learn, but exhausting as a lifestyle.
Let our chefs do the math
This is where total personalization changes the game. When you build your weekly Smart Meals profile, we translate your goal into clear nutritional targets, and our private chefs cook to them. You can tell us your priorities, like more protein or fewer carbs, and the proteins and sides you enjoy most.
Every week you receive your menu by text, approve it, and your meals arrive fresh on Sunday and Tuesday. Every container is portioned for your plan, so hitting your protein goal or staying under your carb limit happens without a kitchen scale.
Plans start at $160 per person per week for one meal a day, 4 days a week, and $390 for two meals a day, 5 days a week (sales tax not included). You only pay after you approve your menu.
